Methodology & Transparency

How GenuVerity Works

A comprehensive guide to our AI-powered investigative journalism platform, source verification system, and fact-checking methodology.

Sources First Philosophy

Transparency at the core of every investigation

GenuVerity inverts the traditional journalism model. Instead of burying sources in footnotes, we display them prominently above the content. Every article opens with a tabbed Sources panel showing exactly where our information comes from.

"Trust is built through transparency. When readers can see and verify our sources before reading our analysis, they become active participants in the investigation rather than passive consumers."

Visible Sources

Primary sources displayed in a collapsible banner above every article, organized by trust score.

Direct Links

Every citation links directly to the original source document, not to an intermediary.

Trust Scores

Algorithmic assessment of source credibility based on domain reputation and historical accuracy.

Source Trust Scoring

Algorithmic credibility assessment

Every source in GenuVerity receives a trust score based on domain reputation, historical accuracy, editorial standards, and transparency practices. Scores are displayed throughout the interface with color-coded indicators.

Trust Scoring Tiers - Tier 1 (85-100) High Trust in green, Tier 2 (70-84) Medium Trust in amber, Tier 3 (below 70) Lower Trust in red
Tier 1
85-100
Reuters, AP, NYT, WSJ, .gov, .edu
Tier 2
70-84
CNN, Forbes, ProPublica, BBC
Tier 3
Below 70
Blogs, Opinion Sites, Unverified

Sources are sorted by trust score in the Sources panel, so the most credible information appears first. Low-trust sources are still included for completeness but are clearly marked.

Nuance Measurement

Avoiding oversimplification

Complex issues rarely have simple answers. GenuVerity is designed to preserve nuance rather than flatten it. Our approach measures and presents multiple dimensions of contested topics.

Mixed Verdicts

Fact checks can return MIXED, MOSTLY TRUE, or MOSTLY FALSE — not just binary TRUE/FALSE when evidence is complex.

Competing Viewpoints

Evidence tabs show both supporting AND contradicting points, letting readers weigh the full picture.

Context Matters

Context tabs provide historical background and situational factors that affect interpretation.

"A claim can be technically true but misleading, or technically false but directionally correct. Our verdicts account for these distinctions with explanatory nuance summaries."

  • Confidence Levels — Verdicts include confidence percentages based on source quality and consensus
  • Multiple Claims — Complex statements are broken into individual claims, each verified separately
  • Nuance Summaries — Every verdict includes a plain-language explanation of caveats and edge cases
  • Source Disagreement — When credible sources conflict, we present both perspectives rather than choosing sides

Known Limitations

What we can't do (yet)

Transparency requires acknowledging boundaries. Here's what GenuVerity does well and where it has limitations:

  • Real-Time Lag — Live search typically reflects web content from the past few hours to days. Breaking news from the last few minutes may not be indexed yet.
  • Paywalled Sources — We cannot access content behind paywalls. Articles from premium publications may only include publicly available excerpts.
  • Non-English Sources — Our search and analysis primarily covers English-language sources. International perspectives may be underrepresented.
  • Visual Verification — We cannot verify images or videos. Deepfake detection and visual media authentication are beyond current capabilities.
  • Primary Source Access — We rely on published sources. We cannot conduct interviews, file FOIA requests, or access unpublished documents.
  • AI Hallucination Risk — While we use real search results and verified sources, AI analysis may occasionally misinterpret or overstate conclusions. Always verify critical claims through original sources.
  • Historical Gaps — Events predating widespread internet coverage may have limited source availability.
  • Specialized Domains — Highly technical topics (medical, legal, scientific) should be verified with domain experts.

GenuVerity is a research assistant, not a replacement for professional journalism, legal advice, or medical consultation. Use our analyses as a starting point for your own investigation.
